Notes: Bharti Kher (1969, London) is a contemporary artist who works with painting, sculpture and installation. The artist is married to Subodh Gupta, who is a contemporary Indian artist best known for his monumental sculptural works. Kher has lived and worked in India since 1993, but was born in London. Her art explores themes like identity, change, and the human body. She often uses everyday objects as both material and symbol, drawing on cultural stories and symbols to question how we find meaning. Kher is especially known for her use of the bindi, a small decorative mark worn on the forehead, which she transforms into a powerful visual language.
Throughout her career, the body has remained central to her work. Her work is influenced by both Indian and Western art traditions, but refuses to fit neatly into one category. Instead, it often leaves space for open interpretation and visual tension.
