Notes: Damien Hirst is a British contemporary artist best known for his provocative works exploring themes of life, death, and consumerism. He rose to fame in the 1990s as a leading figure of the Young British Artists. Hirst is widely known for his animal sculptures in formaldehyde (such as The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, 1991), spot paintings, and the diamond-encrusted skull For the Love of God (2007). His work often blurs the line between art and spectacle. Hirst won the Turner Prize in 1995 and remains one of the most commercially successful living artists.
Described by Hirst himself as “a massive explosion of energy – full of life, colour and optimism,” this vibrant Spin drawing is part of a series of 250 works created in 1995 for a special charity auction for the War Child organisation. The live event, hosted at the former Saatchi Gallery in St. John’s Wood, brought together artists and musicians under the direction of the War Child founder Brian Eno and took place during During Pagan Funwear. This was a fashion fundraising event attended by cultural icons including Stella McCartney, Björk, and members of U2 and Oasis, marking a rare and joyful intersection of art, music and humanitarian effort.
